There is a lot of really exciting stuff coming up in the Texas pole world. I just received word today, that the wonderful ladies behind the Melee on the Bayou Pole Dance Competition are gearing up for the 2nd Annual event. This is going to be a fantastic competition that showcases the talented ladies of Houston’s pole community. The competition is limited to ladies of the greater Houston Metro area, so be sure to check out the rules and requirements.
The competition will be held on December 8, 2012 at Grooves of Houston, 2300 Pierce St, Houston, TX 77003. Starts at 5pm. Dallas pole ladies…anyone else thinking ROAD TRIP?!?!
Another pole competition….umm yea!!! If you haven’t heard, the Southern Pole Championships will be going on in Houston on November 3, 2012. Now, you’d think that with all the stress of MTPS tryouts and waiting for the finalists to be announced, that the last thing I’d be considering is entering another competition. Well surprisingly (even to myself), I was actually super excited to hear about another pole competition here in Texas! It is amazing to see how the pole community keeps growing and all of the new opportunities for us to showcase our talents…and I’m determined to be a part of it.
What I like about this competition is that it caters to a variety of styles and levels, and tryout videos are NOT required…which means that there is NO reason for YOU not to enter. If you’re looking to show off your pole style without the typical competition stress then The Showcase Event was made for you. This event is a performance-only event. No scoring nor feedback from judges will be given and this event will not qualify for later competitions.
If you’re looking for a challenge (and some great competition) then be sure to check out the other three competitive categories. In addition to a different performance style, each features three skill levels – beginner, intermediate and advanced.
The Championship Event: This event is for those dancers wishing to compete with a traditional technical competitive program. Designed to offer competitors the type of experience found at the other major pole competitions, the focus will be on the dancer’s technique, flexibility, artistry and difficulty of tricks.
The Artistic (Light Entertainment) Event: This event is focused less on the difficulty of the tricks executed and more on the dancer’s ability to interpret a piece of music to provide a comical or upbeat performance (as opposed to a more dramatic and serious performance).
The Artistic (Dramatic) Event: This event is focused less on the difficulty of the tricks executed and more on the dancer’s ability to present a serious, emotional artistic interpretation of a piece of music.
I think the best way to excel in all areas of pole is to explore all areas. So part of my personal pole growth is fueled by taking classes at all of the studios here in the DFW…plus it’s a great way to meet more awesome pole friends. Here’s a list of the local studios that I’ve poled at.
So as the pole community continues to grow, we are seeing various avenues that dancers are taking. While still a form of fitness for many, others are turning their attention to teaching, competing, showcasing and more. Pole dancing has also become a gateway into other aerial arts such as silks and hoops. While competing and teaching may not be the next step for many (like myself), showcasing our skills is something that is definitely of interest.
Sadly the July Girl Next Door Event had to be put on hold (although the March GND Texas premier was magnificent!). So the awesome Karen Possessky came up with a great idea to host the New York New York themed pole fund raising event. The New York New York event is an opportunity to showcase Texas pole talent, while raising money for Texas Pole Dancers that are interested in competing. The New York New York pole dancing fundraiser is right around the corner, so be sure to get your tickets.

Naturally, when Girl Next Door announced it would be premiering in Dallas (March 2012) this was a great new opportunity that offered our pole community a sense of performance fulfillment…without the stress of competitions. Competitions are rewarding but they aren’t for everyone. So a pole showcase to pull together our Texas pole talent was definitely what we needed! I skipped the auditions because I didn’t feel I was ready, however I was still lucky to be involved in the event doing something else that I love: Photography!

About Girl Next Door – A Pole Dance Soirée
About Girl Next Door is a monthly production that combines the sensuality of pole dance with the fanciful medium of theater to create a new aesthetic: artistic pole dance. Featuring some of the country’s top-ranked pole performers, Girl Next Door is LA’ first-ever and longest-running artistic pole dance revue.
